Heritage LRT Pop-Up Transit Plaza
- Sustainable Calgary
- Summer 2021
Heritage LRT is a busy convergence point for multiple transit routes and the surrounding Heritage communities. Through community feedback, residents shared that while the station is well-used, it lacks vibrancy, convenience, and a sense of safety. People wanted more walkability, nearby amenities like coffee and fresh food, and more positive activity on-site to make the station feel welcoming.
Sustainable Calgary’s goal was to activate the underused space by the LRT station to address the community’s concerns and desires for the area. So, over three weeks in summer 2021, the space adjacent to the bus loop at the Heritage LRT station became the home of a pop-up transit plaza. Volunteers created a small park using AstroTurf, planter baskets, lounge seating, and outdoor games.
To maximize use of this public space, Sustainable Calgary programmed music, food trucks, live sidewalk mural painting, and family-friendly activities—inviting commuters, residents, and passersby to enjoy and reimagine what this transit space could become.
