Sunnyside ContainR Art Park
- Springboard Performance
- Summer 2025
Springboard Performance collaborated with trans youth to create a vibrant series of murals at the containR Art Park. Over two weeks in July 2025, twelve youth and three youth facilitators took part in a hands-on mural camp led by artist Stephanie Bánszky, where they learned new techniques, explored creative expression, and developed artwork inspired by the conversations and experiences they shared together.
The project brought over twenty people from multiple organizations together, including volunteers, partner staff, and community supporters who helped plan, guide, and celebrate the work. Five murals were completed, visible not only to visitors of the art park but also to thousands of passersby on the C-Train and throughout the neighbourhood. The public response throughout the process was enthusiastic and heartfelt—people stopped to ask questions, take photos, and share the work online, expressing how meaningful it was to see art created by and for a community that is often underrepresented in public space.
The murals helped transform the area into a more welcoming and expressive environment, offering a creative platform for youth while strengthening the sense of safety, belonging, and connection. Testimonials from participants highlighted how affirming and empowering the experience was, describing the camp as a space where they felt supported, celebrated, and able to take creative risks. For many, the project reinforced the power of community, creativity, and shared public space—leaving a lasting impact on both the youth involved and the broader community who now experience the murals every day. Some of the mural containRs have since been placed in different neighbourhoods; Crescent Heights and Inglewood.
